Volkswagen of America announced that its second quarter 2020 sales fell 29 percent, with retail sales down 16 percent from 2019. However, its share of the SUV market has been on the rise, with the latest quarter seeing 60 percent sales in SUVs.
“Positive trends in retail and CPO sales point to our strategy working even in a difficult environment,” said Duncan Movassaghi, executive vice president, sales and marketing of Volkswagen of America. “The all-new Atlas Cross Sport five-seater has filled an important spot in our lineup and is steadily bringing more customers to VW.”
During the second quarter, the Atlas family of vehicles sold 16,321 units. So far, year to date, the Atlas family has sold 31,728 vehicles. The Passat sold 4,120 units during the first quarter of this year and has sold 10,101 units during 2020 so far. In comparison to last year at this time, the Passat’s sales are down 12 percent.
The Atlas and the Passat are both built in Tennessee at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant. The plant employs approximately 3,800 team members.
