Mazda announces CX-50 SUV to be built in Huntsville

The CX-50 will be built at Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, joining Toyota’s Corolla Cross.

The all-new Mazda CX-50, to be made in Alabama, will share the same platform as this CX-30.

Mazda North American Operations has announced that it will build the all-new CX-50 SUV at Mazda Toyota Manufacturing in Huntsville. The Mazda CX-50 will join Toyota’s Corolla Cross on the plant’s production line.

The CX-50 is a midsize crossover that will share its platform with Mazda’s latest generation products, the CX-30 and the Mazda3, with enhanced all-wheel drive capabilities and functionalities for those who enjoy the outdoors. Production begins in January 2022.

The CX-50 is one of three new SUVs Mazda has announced for the U.S. market. The other two SUVs, CX-90 and the CX-70, will be from its large platform and will have plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Details about the Alabama-built CX-50 will be revealed at a later date. However, the north Alabama plant and its approximately 2,000 team members have already started production on the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross.

The $2.3 billion Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant is expected to assemble up to 300,000 vehicles a year at full production, estimated to be evenly split between the Mazda and Toyota vehicles. Currently the plant is seeking to hire another 1,700 employees.
