Increase spurred by North American market and SUV sales.

Kia Corp. recorded global sales of 245,994 units in May, up 49.2% compared to the same month last year.

Sales inside Korea were down 6.4% in comparison to May 2020.

Outside of Korea, sales jumped 74.2% from a year earlier to 198,093 units. Kia’s range of SUV models led the sales growth, with sedan models also having a strong showing. The North American market helped contribute to this year’s strong global sales results.

Despite the tough business environment, Kia plans to continue its focus on creating sales momentum through new models, such as its EV6 battery electric vehicle and the recently teased all-new Sportage SUV.

In May, Kia America announced it would build its first advanced-platform electric vehicle, the EV6, which is expected to go on sale in the U.S. in early 2022.

In West Point, Georgia, Kia makes the Telluride and Sorento SUVs and the K5 sedan. Of those vehicles assembled in Georgia, 90% are destined for markets across America. The plant has the capacity to make more than 340,000 vehicles annually.
