Hyundai Motor reports sales for Q4 and 2020

Hyundai Motor America has reported a 2% increase in sales for December 2020 in comparison to December 2019, but a 10% decline for total vehicles sold in 2020.

In December, Hyundai sold 57,777 retail units, with 70% of those being SUVs. Retail sales of each Hyundai model of SUV rose: Venue going up 108%, Kona increasing 11%, Tucson increasing more than 10%, the Palisade going up 46% and the Santa Fe increasing 27% — its best December ever. Eco-friendly vehicle retail sales also increased in December with the Ioniq up 101% and the Sonata Hybrid up 409%.

For the last quarter of 2020, Hyundai sold a total of 178,844 units, a 2% decline, and 155,584 retail units, a 3% increase compared to Q4 2019.

For the year, Hyundai sold 622,269 total vehicles. The bright spot for the entire year were SUVs, which set an all-time record at 402,661 total units sold, a 9% increase.

Hyundai, which has its only U.S. manufacturing plant in Montgomery, Alabama, currently makes the Santa Fe SUV, as well as the Elantra and Sonata sedans. However, in the near future, the $1.8 billion plant will add the Santa Cruz and Tucson SUVs to its roster.

Taking a look at the vehicles currently made at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama:

  • Elantra sold 10,849 units in December 2020 compared to 18,720 in December 2019. For the fourth quarter of 2020, the Elantra sold 30,372 units compared to 49,625 vehicles sold in Q4 2019. For the year, Elantra sold 105,475 vehicles, down from 2019’s yearly total of 175,094.
  • Sonata sales were up with 8,059 units sold in December 2020 compared to 7,105 units in December 2019. For the fourth quarter of 2020, Sonata sales also increased with 23,871 units sold compared to 19,098 units in Q4 2019. However, for the 2020 year, Hyundai sold 76,997 Sonata vehicles in comparison to 87,466 in 2019.
  • Santa Fe sold 12,500 units in December 2020, an increase from 10,350 sold in December 2019. For the final quarter of 2020, Santa Fe sales were down slightly, selling 30,337 in 2020 compared to 31,054 in Q4 2019. For the 2020 year, sales of the Santa Fe were 100,757 in comparison to 127,373 in 2019.
