Hyundai Adds Fifth Vehicle to Alabama Lineup

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson, soon to be made in Montgomery, Alabama

Hyundai Motor America introduced the all-new 2022 Tucson to the U.S. today, while noting that it will now be manufactured at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama facility in Montgomery.

HMMA, which started vehicle production in 2005, is Hyundai’s only U.S. manufacturing facility and produces the company’s highest volume U.S. models including the Santa Fe, Elantra and Sonata. Hyundai will now be adding the 2022 Tucson and Santa Cruz to the HMMA lineup because of the continued customer preference for SUVs. While the Tucson will still be produced in Korea, the majority of the Tucsons produced for U.S. customers will now come from Alabama.

“Hyundai’s decision to build the Tucson in Montgomery is indicative of their belief in the performance and expertise of our HMMA team. It allows Hyundai to quickly adapt to consumer preferences and demonstrates the long-term commitment between Hyundai and the Montgomery community,” said Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed.

Tucson is Hyundai Motor’s best-selling model globally. The fourth-generation Tucson showcases an edgy and aggressive look, reflecting Hyundai’s new design identity. The latest evolution of the vehicle includes a bigger and wider body than previous generation models, giving the SUV a coupe-like character. It also sports the latest in Hyundai’s signature headlamp architecture called Parametric Hidden Lights, as well as a dual cockpit layout that offers more personalized space for the high-tech user experience.

“Montgomery remains deeply committed to its partnership with Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and is honored to learn that now five of Hyundai’s best-selling innovative and high-quality models are built here in the River Region,” said Montgomery County Commission Chairman Elton Dean.

HMMA announced the production of the Santa Cruz in Montgomery in November, 2019 for the 2021 model. The additional production of the Santa Cruz was part of a $410 million expansion project at the plant that also was expected to add 200 jobs.

Hyundai also revealed teaser images of its Tucson N Line model, an addition to its 2022 Tucson SUV lineup. The Tucson N Line expands the company’s N brand portfolio to seven models launching in 2022. Other N Line models include the Sonata N Line and the Elantra N Line, as well as the Veloster N model. The N Line models will offer an even more aggressive exterior design, as well as differentiating interior details.

HMMA employs more than 3,000 team members at its assembly plant, which has an annual operating capacity of 400,000 vehicles.
