Automotive Organization Teams With Community Colleges on Scholarships

Many of the OEMs that operate in Alabama have specialized programs with the state’s community colleges. Recently several of Wallace State Community College’s automotive service technology students enrolled in Mercedes-Benz Tech Co-Op program, coordinated by Steve Colburn of Mercedes-Benz U.S. International. These students and others like them could apply for the scholarships mentioned below.

Current high school and college students interested in an automotive career can apply for a scholarship to use at one of Alabama’s community colleges.

The Alabama Automotive Manufacturers Association has partnered with the Alabama Community College System to provide $189,000 for scholarships to help 52 students pursue a technical education certificate or associate degree in automotive manufacturing. Each student’s scholarship is for $3,600 and covers tuition, fees and/or books needed. The deadline to apply for the scholarships is Nov. 30. Students awarded the scholarships will begin classes in the spring, summer or fall semesters of 2021.

Students interested must use the scholarship toward an automotive-related program, such as automotive manufacturing technology, automotive manufacturing, automotive service technician, computer numerical control, engineering technology, industrial electronics technology, industrial maintenance technology, injection molding, logistics, machine shop/tool technology, manufacturing technology, mechanical design technology, mechatronics or welding technology.

Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA and submit a 500-word essay on why they want to work in Alabama’s automotive industry, as well as submit the application, a reference letter, a photograph and an unofficial college or high school transcript.

Founded in 2001, the Alabama Automotive Manufacturers Association promotes the growth of the automotive industry in the state, as well as its continued improvement of its member companies.

The Alabama Community College System is comprised of 24 community colleges in more than 130 locations throughout the state.
